Benton Harbor Community Garden Tour next month

Set for August 2 is a community garden tour in Benton Harbor. Mosaic CCDA Director Gabrielle Engle tells us there’s been a movement in recent years to turn empty lots into gardens for everyone to enjoy.

“There’s quite a few different gardens, including the one that I manage as well,” Engle said. “So, we envision an event that would just bring greater awareness to the residents of Benton Harbor about these gardens and community beautification projects that are occurring right next door.”

Five gardens will be on the tour, with four of them on Broadway. Engle says each one is unique. She’s hoping the community comes to check them out and gets inspired.

“This is kind of an opportunity for those who are interested in community gardening to come together to talk about greater strategies.”

The gardens are The Gallery Art Garden, The Table, Flourish, and the BH Children, Youth and Young Adult Garden, all on Broadway. The fifth garden is the Fresh Start Children’s Garden on Pearl Street. Growing Together: The Benton Harbor Community Garden Tour will be all day on Wednesday, August 2. Engle says it will not be guided, so everyone can stroll over to each community garden at their leisure and talk with the sponsors.
