Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad says there’s a “housing revolution” taking place in the city as several developments are underway, about to get started, or recently finished.

The latest is The Corner at Wall Street, a $22 million development taking place between Colfax Avenue and Wall Street. Crews are on site now, and Muhammad says when the mixed use commercial and residential space is finished, it will have 46 apartments on the top two floors and space for supportive services on the ground floor.

“It’ll be a three story building,” Muhammad said. “We expect to see social service offices to provide necessities for a low income residents. We’re also working with a developer with the expectation of our first and only grocery store in the 4 .4 square miles.”

Funding from the state is helping developer MHT Housing complete the project. Muhammad says it’s been made possible by relationships between the city and its partners.

“We haven’t had a building built from the ground up at that cost probably since the DHS building.”

Construction on The Corner at Wall Street is expected to wrap up late next year, and Muhammad says we can expect to see more developments like it in the future.

Meanwhile, Muhammad says ground will be broken on Project T, a housing and commercial development at the site of the former Mercy Hospital, on September 30. That will be a mix of duplexes and apartments aimed at the Missing Middle. Muhammad also points to the former Modern Plastics property, where he says more condos are planned.

The mayor tells us with all of this work happening, we’re now in a “Benton Harbor Renaissance.”
