A track event held in Benton Harbor on August 12 is being hailed as a success. “The Fastest Male and Female on the Streets” track meet took place at Dwight P. Mitchell City Center Park and included runners from ages 5 to 18. Benton Harbor Athletic Sports Club Chair Dayrl Jackson told city commissioners this week the talent on display from young athletes was a sight to see.
“Those kids turned that thing out,” Jackson said. “We saw some amazing running that I have never seen before in my 30 something years. We had some kids — ages five years of age, six, seven, eight, and nine — we had kids running with older kids.”
Jackson thanked the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety for closing streets to make the running possible, and noted the top competitors received medals. He promised the event will come back next year. The Fastest Male and Female on the Streets was started this year as a rekindling of the Berrien County Olympian Games, which Jackson remembers from the 1970s.
