Benton Township approves fundraiser license, permit for cidery addition

The Benton Township Board of Trustees has approved requests from several businesses and non-profits for special events or additions.
At this week’s meeting, trustees granted a charitable gaming license to the Friends of Berrien County Animal Control so it can hold a raffle at its Bids for Barks fundraiser this month. The group’s Katherine Francis tells us Bids for Barks makes a big difference.
“Last year they raised about $80,000 for us and Paws of Hope at the time,” Francis said. “This year, it’s just Friends of Berrien County Animal Control, and spay and neuter efforts across the county.”
The event will be April 27 at The Inn at Harbor Shores, although tickets are already sold out.
Also Tuesday, trustees approved a special use permit for the Carriage House Cidery to open an outdoor tasting room. The cidery’s Paula Camp told us more.
“We’ll be able to have people kind of relax in our backyard,” Camp said. “Basically, it’s going to be a patio and a little fire pit and some shelter. So if it rains or something, people won’t get wet. But it’s really a pretty location. It’s right adjacent to Harbor Shores and kind of forested, to a certain extent. So, it’s really a place where you can kind of relax and just sit and have a good time, we hope.”
The Carriage House has operated at 902 North Shore Drive since 2001.
Finally on Tuesday, the board of trustees approved a letter of support for a liquor license for North Pier Brewing to serve alcohol near Harbor Shores during this year’s KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. That last vote was pending a legal review by the township attorney.
