Benton Township approves new features for wedding venue

A wedding venue in Benton Township is about to get a bit more glamorous while retaining its signature rustic charm.

The Benton Township Board of Trustees this week voted to approve a special use permit site plan for Sunrise Farms at 1310 Hillandale Road to add some “glamping” amenities. Township Supervisor Cathy Yates tells us the wedding venue wants to make things a little more comfortable for guests.

“It’s just a place where they’re going to set up portable things that can be taken down in the fall of the year so that people that go there can be able to shower and stay the whole day without having to leave the area,” Yates said.

Sunrise Farms is a two-century old family fruit farm that boasts of “a three-story barn from the late 1800s, the oldest surviving log cabin in Michigan, and a 1928 original farmhouse.” The glamping — or “glamorous camping” — area it’s seeking would feature three temporary tents and the outdoor shower.

The township’s approval this week came on a recommendation from the planning commission.
