The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is celebrating another successful Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics in Michigan.

The latest plunge was at Watermark Brewing Company in Stevensville on Saturday with about 150 brave souls taking to the water. Sheriff Chuck Heit tells us they passed their fundraising goal.

So the sheriff’s office itself, we raised a little over $14,000,” Heit said. “We did come in second. We were in a friendly competition with Berrien RESA, who did pass us again that morning. But as a group, we raised, looks like today, a little over $111 ,000.

Heit has taken part in the Polar Plunge for several years now. So, how was the water on Saturday?

It was good. The air out this year was a little colder than in the past, but it’s a great cause. It’s ‘Freezin’ for a Reason.’ It’s a great opportunity to support a great cause in the Special Olympics.”

Heit notes the Special Olympics in Michigan has a law enforcement class of plungers when it holds events around the state each year, and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department this year took top honors in that category.

Heit adds it’s not too late for supporters to make a donation. You can do so right here.
