Berrien Forward to Host Healthcare Townhall Friday in BH

Berrien Forward will be hosting a Healthcare Townhall this Friday, March 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Benton Harbor Public Library, bringing together healthcare leaders, elected officials, and community advocates to address rising healthcare costs, access challenges, and disparities impacting working families across Berrien County.

The event, which also marks the launch of the organization’s 2026 campaign cycle, comes as many residents continue to face rising healthcare costs, provider shortages, and barriers to mental health services. Organizers say the townhall is designed to create a space for open dialogue, community input, and accountability as local leaders work to address disparities in care and access. “This is about empowering residents and creating real solutions,” said Chokwe Pitchford, Executive Director of Berrien Forward. “Healthcare is not a partisan issue, it’s personal, and our communities deserve leadership that prioritizes people over politics.”

The discussion will focus on both immediate healthcare concerns and the broader conditions that influence health outcomes. Panelists will explore how factors such as housing stability, food access, transportation, education, and economic opportunity directly shape the well-being of individuals and families across the region.

The panel will feature Nicki Britten, Director of Population Health at Corewell Health, who will speak on regional health trends and preventative care strategies, along with State Representative Joey Andrews (38th District), who will discuss state-level healthcare priorities. Margaret Clayborn, a retired Community Health Worker, will share firsthand perspectives on barriers families face when accessing care and essential resources, while Kyna King, Senior Project Specialist at Corewell Health, will provide insight on maternal and child health initiatives and community support systems.

In addition to discussion, attendees will learn about local resources available throughout Berrien County, including preventative and primary care services, mental health and substance use support, food assistance programs, housing and rental resources, and community wellness initiatives. Organizers say connecting residents with these services is a key part of improving overall community health.

The townhall is intended to be interactive, giving residents an opportunity to ask questions, share concerns, and help shape priorities for local, state, and federal leadership moving forward.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Benton Harbor Public Library, 213 E. Wall St. For more information, contact info@berrienforward.com.
