Just as fall is about to take control there’s word that a couple of major St. Joseph River bridges will undergo repairs that will last virtually all the way to spring.
The Michigan Department of Transportation says that repairs to both the M-63 bridge over the St. Joe River and the I-94 Business Route bridge over the St. Joseph River will get underway next Thursday, September 5th and likely won’t be complete until Sunday, March 22nd of 2020.
The two major Berrien County repair projects from MDOT will cost $5.7-million and include multiple facets including:
- Joint replacement
- Patching
- Overlay
- Steel repairs
- Painting
- Mechanical rehabilitation
- Hydraulic rehabilitation
- Electrical rehabilitation
MDOT says that the M-63 (Main Street in St. Joe) Blossomland Bascule Bridge and the I-94 Business Route (West Main Street in Benton Harbor) Bicentennial Bascule Bridge will get the complete makeovers in the major 7-month project.
MDOT says the two projects will extend the life and operations of the bridges, ensuring the safe operations for vehicular, pedestrian and marine traffic.
Each bridge will be closed for construction but not at the same time. While one bridge is closed the other will be used as part of the posted detour.
