Just days before Christmas last December, we told you here of the merger between Gerbel & Company of St. Joseph with Grand Rapids-based Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors. Now comes news that the combined firm has been tabbed as one of the 2018 Accounting Today's Best Accounting Firms to Work For in America.
Accounting Today has partnered with Best Companies Group to identify companies that have excelled in creating quality workplaces for employees. It's a survey and awards program designed to identify, recognize and honor the best employers in the accounting profession, benefiting its economy, workforce and businesses. The list is made up of 100 firms.
The entire list may be found by clicking the link below. It is currently an unranked list in alphabetical order. The ranked list, along with an in-depth report, will be published in early November on AccountingToday.com and in their print edition. Here's the link to the unranked listing:
To be considered for participation, firms had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:
- Must be an accounting firm
- Have a facility in the United States
- Have a minimum of 15 employees working in the United States
- Must be in business a minimum of 1 year
Firms from across the United States entered the two-part survey process to determine Accounting Today’s Best Accounting Firms to Work For. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. That part of the process was worth approximately 25-percent of the total evaluation.
The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. That part of the process was worth approximately 75-percent of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top firms and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process, analyzed the data and determined the final ranking.
Daniel Hood is Editor-in-Chief at Accounting Today. He says, “The firms on this list represent the best workplaces in the accounting profession,” and adds, “They are outstanding places to build a career.”

For Bob Gerbel, Brian Wisneski and others in the St. Joseph office of the merged agency, it's further affirmation of the decision late last year to complete the transition. Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors is a full-service CPA firm with offices in St. Joseph, Grand Rapids, and Greenville, Michigan. The firm provides accounting, business advisory, tax return preparation, tax planning, auditing, financial planning and IT advisory services with an emphasis on closely-held and family-owned businesses.
The firm also services Governmental entities, Not-for-Profit Organizations and Employee Benefit Plans. Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors has grown to become one of the largest locally-owned, independent CPA firms in West Michigan.
The move by Gerbel & Company to merge with the Grand Rapids firm after nearly 50 years in business and decades of meticulous attention to detail was the next step in the evolution of one of the state’s foremost certified public accounting firms anchored in Michigan’s Great Southwest. By linking arms with the similar team at Hungerford Nichols, Gerbel's desire was to increase the value of both firms to clientele across the region.
Robert Gerbel, who launched Gerbel & Company, P.C. 50 years ago, merged on New Year’s Day with the team at Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors and continues to serve clientele all across the region.
