Bon-Ton Closures Mean Loss of a Rivertown Crossings Anchor

The company that is closing down Carson’s in the Orchards Mall of Benton Harbor has announced they will also cease operations of the Younkers department store at the Rivertown Crossings Mall in the Grand Rapids suburb of Grandville. Bon-Ton Stores has identified that Younkers store and three more Carson’s stores — all in the Detroit Metro area — as closures coming in less than two months.

Those stores join more than 3,800 retail stores across the nation expected to close in the coming year alone.

Younkers, and the Detroit metro Carson’s stores targeted for closure will all be closed on June 5th according to Bon-Ton execs based at corporate headquarters in Milwaukee. The Detroit metro stores including shops in Clinton Township, Livonia and Rochester Hills.

The Carson’s store at the Orchards Mall has indicated that their last day is now two weeks away on April 24th.

The end of Younkers at Rivertown Crossings reportedly impacts more than 160 employees of that store. All of the Bon-Ton closures have come in the wake of the corporate Chapter 11 filing back in February.

America’s growing appetite for online shopping continues to play a major role in the closure of more and more brick and mortar stores with declining sales. Major retailers nationwide have been watching closely for trends in an attempt to determine what the public wants and on what platform.
