Broadband provider updates Berrien Commissioners

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has gotten an update on efforts to expand broadband internet in the community from Mercury Broadband, a fiber and fixed wireless provider. Speaking to commissioners last week, Mercury’s Scott Clark said the company has been a partner of the state and the FCC as it received grants to roll out broadband in rural areas. Mercury received about $38 million from the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund to focus on southwest Michigan.

“We’ve got about 250,000 people that have coverage, in terms of if they want to sign up for the service, they have availability,” Clark said.

Berrien County is served out of Mercury’s center in Kalamazoo. Clark said Mercury primary offers fixed wireless internet in the county. They also offer fiber in some locations. Clark said much of Mercury’s activity in Berrien County has been in the central and northern portions. He says more wireless sites are coming online all of the time.
