Families and individuals with special needs will once again have the opportunity to enjoy major motion pictures with modifications designed to make the entire experience “extra comfortable and welcoming” at select Celebration! Cinema theatres.
The team at the Michigan-based theatres say, “Lights up! Sound Down!” They tell us that this Saturday, March 27th, Celebration is pleased to re-launch the movie-going experience designed especially for individuals and families with special needs, including autism. Sensory Showtimes present current movies with modifications intended to make the presentation extra comfortable and welcoming.
- The volume of the presentation is lower
- Auditorium lights dim but remain on
- Movies are presented in 2D with open-captioning and begin at show time with limited previews
- Guests are invited to enjoy the big screen experience in an accepting environment
- Cheering, calling out and movement is welcome!
The first movie in the new Sensory Show line up will be TOM & JERRY, with RAYA & THE LAST DRAGON soon to follow on Saturday, April 10th. Movies are shown at 10:30am, preceding other regularly scheduled shows, at select locations. Check the Celebration Cinema website for updates and details.
Jane Eppard, Executive Director, says, “When Family Hope Foundation shared the news that Sensory Showtimes are back it was met with so much enthusiasm!” She adds, “We are excited to see movies again and to experience the theater with all the special accommodations Celebration Cinema offers individuals with extra needs. Even the news that concessions are open was exciting! This has been a marathon. Many families are ready to reengage in a safe environment and experience the sense of community Sensory Showtimes offers. We as an organization are delighted to be a part of this wonderful program.”
Dozens of other community organizations have become partners and advocates for Sensory Showtimes over the past few years, and are similarly eager and ready to see the return of the program.
Emily Loeks, Director of Community Affairs for Celebration Cinema, says, “We aim to create space where people connect with each other and experience great stories together,” while adding, “We hope that Sensory Showtimes open the door wider for more in our community to have that experience.”
