The longtime owner of Northern Berrien County’s Ace Hardware stores has passed away.

Matthew P. (Chip) Borre died after a long battle with what his family called ‘a terminal disease.’

Chip Borre had been involved in the Ace Hardware stores for more than 50 years, taking over the business from his father.

Originally located in Scottdale, Borre moved his St. Joseph location to Niles Avenue, then opened stores in Stevensville and Watervliet.  Recently, he had announced a fourth location to open in the Spring in Bridgman.  The stores are now operated by Chip Borre’s son, Matt.

Here is the full text of the announcement from the Borre family on the Ace Hardware social media:

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that the president of the company, Mathew Peter Borre III (Chip) passed away peacefully after a long and valiant battle with a terminal disease. He died peacefully surrounded by those he loved. His legacy will live on with his children/grandchildren and his many dedicated years establishing and growing the local Ace Hardwares in Saint Joseph, Stevensville, and Watervliet communities. His most recent goal, Bridgman Ace Hardware, will still be scheduled to open Spring of 2026, per his wishes.
