Corewell Health Opens Emergency Dept for Pregnant Patients at SJ Lakeland Hospital

Corewell Health

Corewell Health™ Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph has converted its obstetrics triage area into a dedicated Obstetrics Emergency Department (OB ED).

In a statement, Corwell said the change will help pregnant people get faster and more specialized care. The OB ED is staffed 24/7 by licensed OB doctors and equipped to handle urgent pregnancy-related concerns with enhanced efficiency and expertise.

The OB ED is for women who are at least 14 weeks pregnant or up to six weeks after giving birth.

The OB ED can treat the following pregnancy-related concerns:

  • A decrease in fetal movement
  • High blood pressure
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Signs of labor before 37 weeks
  • Vaginal bleeding

Note: For serious injuries or non-OB emergencies, patients may be treated at the main emergency department.

OB ED visits are classed as emergency services. Patients are advised to consult their insurance provider with questions about  coverage and any potential copays.

For more questions about the OB ED, patients should speak with their doctor or contact the hospital directly at 269.983.8266.
