It's one of the toughest professional certifications to achieve in seemingly any industry, but Cornerstone Alliance's Shelley Klug mastered the examination in fine form this week becoming one of a rare group to accomplish the task on the first effort.

Klug, who is Business Development Manager for Cornerstone, was in Tulsa, Oklahoma over the weekend to take the intense, multi-part examination for certification in economic development and aced the test on her first go round. Her boss, Cornerstone Alliance President Rob Cleveland lauded her performance saying, "Receiving the CEcD designation is the pinnacle achievement for an economic development practitioner." He adds, "Shelley is among the less than 30-percent of candidates who sit for the CEcD and pass the first time, another great accomplishment."

The International Economic Development Council administers the examination for the designation of Certified Economic Developer, or CEcD, which is a global recognition of mastering principal skills in economic development. Klug brings more than 14 years of economic development experience to the table, including her most recent role as Business Development Manager for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation prior to her stint at Cornerstone. At the MEDC, she served as a liaison between businesses, communities, local partner and multiple state agencies to connect with valuable services and resources.

As a member of Cornerstone's Business Development Team, Klug plays an integral role in the organization's Business Retention & Expansion Program, as well as Business Attraction and Product Development.

The CEcD designation recognizes qualified and committed practitioners in the economic development field, and is the standard of excellence within the profession. Candidates seeking their CEcD designation must pass an aggressive and comprehensive series of three-part examinations over the two-day period. They are tested on their knowledge, proficiency and judgment in key areas of economic development including business retention and expansion, marketing, finance, workforce development, community development, real estate, strategic planning, tech-led economic development, and management.

Klug joins Rob Cleveland as the second member of Cornerstone Alliance with that certification.
