Discharged Bank & Retail Workers Get New Help From MI Works

Former employees swept up in the closure of major retailers like Carsons, J.C. Penney and in recent banking consolidations now have a renewed source in Michigan’s Great Southwest for help in finding a new job or lining up additional career training.

Thanks to a new Dislocated Worker Grant, Michigan Works! Berrien, Cass, Van Buren is alerting those who have lost jobs in the retail and banking worlds over the past year that there are solutions open to them.

The team at Michigan Works! is assisted eligible jobseekers in finding new employment or connecting them with local training providers for short-term certificate programs.

Sam Gizzi, Talent Development Manager at Michigan Works! Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, says,  “With recent closures at Target, JC Penney, and other retail establishments, Michigan Works! recognized the need for additional services. This grant can help individuals who are looking to transition into a new field, while helping them develop the necessary skills toward a long-term career.” Gizzi notes, “Our goal is to help individuals get additional training and find work here in southwest Michigan.”

The grant is being administered by Michigan Works! Berrien, Cass, Van Buren in partnership with the State of Michigan and the United States Department of Labor.

Gizzi suggests, “If you think this is a good fit for you or someone you know, come see us! We would love to talk about a customized plan to help you achieve your goals.”
