DNR Says Early Reporting Of Deer Season Positive

Hunters across Michigan are officially into firearm deer season, but with a twist. A new law is in place for when someone bags a deer, giving them 72 hours to report it online. Those who don’t risk fines or even jail time. Chad Stewart is the Department of Natural Resource’s deer, elk, and moose management specialist. He says the first-year law has been received well.

“I think the response from the hunters has been fantastic,” says Stewart. “I commend them for adopting this system so quickly. I’m excited to see where this will go, not only this year, but into the future.”

Stewart says the DNR is taking an educational approach to the new law, as opposed to enforcement, because the law is a big change for hunters. Hunters who bag a deer are asked to report their harvest online at Michigan.gov/DNR to comply with the new law.
