Emergency Shelter Services of Berrien County is planning its annual Coldest Night of the Year walk for Saturday, February 28 in Benton Harbor to raise money for those experiencing homelessness and hunger.

Emergency Shelter Services says the event is part of a national initiative held in more than 300 communities across North America.

Locally, the walk will begin and end at The Secret Garden in Benton Harbor and feature both two kilometer and five kilometer routes. Participants will also take part in a celebration at the finish line. Adults who raise $150 and youth who raise $75 will receive the official Coldest Night of the Year winter hat.

This marks the second year Emergency Shelter Services has hosted the event, with a fundraising goal of $40,000. Last year, 92 walkers took part.

Event Director Sarah Eades says the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser is a highlight of the year for the organization, and a critical part of its budget.
