There’s a new president and CEO at the helm at Berrien County Cancer Service.

Tyanna Essig has been named to the position, succeeding Nancy Church, who is going into semi-retirement.

Essig tells us she’s worked with multiple non-profits around Southwest Michigan, including St. Joseph Today and the Greater Niles Chamber of Commerce, but she’s been with Berrien County Cancer Service for about four years now. She’s found great meaning in serving those who need help at a vulnerable time.

“Cancer tends to devastate not only their finances but their bodies, and their emotional health is at stake when they are going through a cancer diagnosis,” Essig said. “So I really have a passion for wanting to help make a difference for cancer patients with their emotional wellness.”

Berrien County Cancer Service provides a variety of supports to those battling cancer, whether it’s in the form of in-home nurse visits, medical supplies, or counselling. Essig says she’s pleased to continue that mission while expanding.

“Our nurses are still going to continue going out, but we are going to try to be doing support groups and bringing in speakers and creating some wellness activities for cancer patients.”

Moving ahead, Essig says she wants to create more programs to continue supporting patients after their cancer battle, and she notes Berrien County Cancer Service has several fundraising events on the horizon. That includes its big gala at The Inn at Harbor Shores on September 15 and Pennies for Patients on October 1. Meanwhile, Nancy Church will continue working for the organization as a nurse.

Berrien County Cancer Service has been helping cancer patients in the county since 1948.
