The St. Joe Kickers Sport Club will hold an Oktoberfest celebration this Saturday, and it’s inviting everyone to come and make merry.

Kickers Club President Neil Harris tells us they’re going to have live German music, traditional German food, dancing, and a large selection of German beers to honor the Deutschland tradition that started in Bavaria. The first Oktoberfest was in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig.

“The event was so successful that it actually led to an annual celebration,” Harris said. “And so they came together to kind of celebrate their anniversary, but even more so it just became a giant celebration of the area.”

In the years since, Oktoberfest has grown and become an event anyone can celebrate worldwide.

Harris says those who show up to the Kickers Club Oktoberfest in German attire will get in for free.

“We definitely accept hats, lederhosen, any kind of traditional German attire, and I think we’ve even let the occasional German soccer jersey slide. So if you’ve got something that’s got some German on it, bring it out, we’ll see what happens.”

Those who aren’t decked out in something German will have to pay $5 to get in.

The Oktoberfest party will be held at the Kickers Club dance hall on Hetler Drive, just off M-139, near Berrien Springs on Saturday starting at 6:30. Harris says it will be family friendly, and everyone can stay as long as they like as he expects the festivities to continue until about 11 p.m.
