The Benton Harbor Planning Commission has approved a site plan amendment for the new Harbor Shores Wee Course, the golf course for youngsters planned along Champions Way and Graham Avenue.

At a meeting this week, Chris Cook with Harbor Shores told planners the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy didn’t approve of plans for a fence passing through some wetlands, so the plan is to move the fence closer to the Graham Avenue sidewalk. He said the three-foot fence is important to the project.

“We feel like the fence is very important from a safety perspective, both to control access to the site and eliminate the potential for folks getting hit,” Cook said. “And then also, as I previously mentioned, that this is catering largely towards children, that we don’t want them ambling off out into the roadway.”

Cook said work on the Wee Course is well underway with designer and pro golfer Colin Montgomerie visiting for the groundbreaking last week. The Wee Course will be nine short holes intended both for children and novice golfers. Cook said kids, as long as they come with an adult, will be able to play the Wee Course for free, and there will be space for events and concessions at the attraction.

After several questions about the fence material and design, the planning commission agreed to its new location. It won’t affect the road.

The Wee Couse is expected to be finished and open next spring.
