Fifth Third Bank has added to their premier sponsorship of Steve’s Run at Southwestern Michigan College by donating $7,000 to the event.

The 10K run, 5K walk/run and fun run, which takes place Saturday, July 27 at SMC’s Dowagiac campus, benefits the Steven Briegel Scholarship Fund and Mayo Clinic’s Cancer Research Fund. Last year’s event raised nearly $14,000. The 45th Original Trail Race starts at 8:30 a.m. in front of the David C. Briegel Building. Breast cancer survivor Emmy Rickert, who has been featured twice in People magazine, will speak at the awards ceremony about 10 a.m. in Alumni Plaza.

Those who still wish to participate in this year’s Steve’s Run can still do so by registering here. The cost to join the 5K walk/run is $20, $25 for the 10K run, while the fun run only costs $1. Starting July 26 and on the day of the event, the cost for both the 5K and 10K goes to $30; participation in the fun run will still only cost $1.

Steve’s Run started life as the Road and Trail Race in 1972. It was renamed in 1992 for Steven Briegel, son of former SMC President David Briegel, who passed away from cancer at the age of 22. You can learn more about Steve’s Run by watching the video below.
