Commercial videographers and photographers, hobbyists, sports enthusiasts tracking the action from above, and anyone else using or considering the use of unmanned drones have a free opportunity to learn some critical rules regarding how, when, and where they can be used and who can use them.
South Bend International Airport authorities are hosting a free informational forum Thursday evening, September 15th, at the airport regarding the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems — or, as they are commonly referred to — drones.
Both recreational and commercial operators are being encouraged to attend, inasmuch as the discussion will review the safety responsibilities drone operators should undertake before flying such devices in the South Bend area, and rules that could apply to most other communities and venues as well.
Thursday's event is open to the public and will be held in the South Bend International Airport terminal atrium which is located on the second level, east of Delta’s ticket counter.
Mike Daigle is Executive Director at SBN. He says, “It’s important to understand the impact drones have on air safety, especially when flying near an airport.” Daigle adds, “Individuals, of all ages, operate these small aircraft. This event will enlighten users on the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) legalities, and how to safely and responsibly fly a drone.”
If you attend, you can park in the short term lot as parking will be validated for all attendees, allowing you to attend for free. There is no fee to attend, and you can simply show up to take part — no pre-registration is required.
South Bend International’s multi-modal terminal serves over one million air, rail and bus passengers each year. According to the 2012 Economic Impact Report from the Aviation Authority of Indiana, South Bend International's total annual economic impact on South Bend and surrounding communities was in excess of $1.7 billion.
