Fresh start expungement fair coming in September

Benton Harbor-based nonprofit Present Pillars is hosting an Expungement Resource Fair on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Walmart, 1400 Mall Drive in Benton Harbor. The event will connect community members with resources to help clear eligible criminal records, opening the door to new opportunities for employment, housing, and education.

Over the past two years, Present Pillars has helped more than 500 individuals navigate the expungement process. These Expungement Resource Fairs are designed to provide direct support for those seeking a fresh start, with legal experts and advocates on-site to guide individuals through the expungement process. Partnering with Legal Aid of Western Michigan and Safe & Just Michigan, Present Pillars is committed to breaking down barriers that prevent individuals from moving forward.

“Too many people in our community are still being held back by mistakes from their past,” said James Gunter, Executive Director of Present Pillars.

“This fair is about giving people the second chance they deserve. Hosting it at a familiar place like Walmart makes it easier for community members to access the resources they need to provide for their families, rebuild their lives, and contribute fully to our community.”

Benton Charter Township Supervisor Cathy Yates emphasized the life-changing impact of the initiative. “Expungement can be a game changer for you and your family. Become independent by removing barriers and seek life-changing opportunities through Present Pillars’ assistance,” Yates said.

Present Pillars invites residents from Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties and as well as surrounding communities to take part in this event. Attendees will have the opportunity to take the first step toward a fresh start. The event is free and open to the public, with pre-registration encouraged by clicking the link here.
