Spring may be just teasing us this week, but local gardeners are already looking ahead.
The River Valley Garden Club — well known across Harbor Country and Southwest Michigan for its annual plant sale — is inviting the public to dig a little deeper with a two-day Gardening School this April.
The workshop will be held Friday, April 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and Saturday, April 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Harbert Community Church, 6444 Sawyer Road in Sawyer.
Designed for gardeners of all experience levels, the program features four focused sessions: container gardening, native trees and shrubs, plant growth factors, and growing mushrooms. Each class stands on its own, so participants don’t need prior coursework — or even a green thumb — to benefit.
Club leaders say the goal is simple: give people practical knowledge they can use in their own yards while connecting with others who share an interest in gardening. The group hosted similar workshops last year that drew strong attendance, and this year’s lineup features all-new topics.
The event is sponsored by Michigan Garden Clubs. Registration is $60 for garden club members and $75 for nonmembers, and includes continental breakfast and lunch both days. Attendance is capped at 60 participants, with an April 3 registration deadline.
The River Valley Garden Club draws members from throughout southwest Michigan and northern Indiana. In addition to monthly meetings, the club hosts field trips, guest speakers, hands-on workshops, and service projects throughout the year.
Of course, many in the area know the organization best for its annual Plant Sale, set for May 16 — a spring tradition that attracts gardeners from all over the region.
