At a time when we argue vociferously with one another on social media with increasing regularity and decreasing civility, the people of Berrien County had a total of twenty opportunities to vote a straight up Yes or No vote on issues ranging from police, fire, and road millages to marijuana and libraries, and in every single case the final response was a Yes vote.
Ballot issues ranging from the two State Proposals that appeared on everybody’s ballot in Michigan, to individualized issues that only appeared on ballots in the impacted community or neighborhood were given across the board approvals in Tuesday’s election.
Here’s how Berrien County tallied ballot issue votes:
- State Proposal One: 52,315 Yes and 8,586 No (with 80-percent of precincts reporting)
- State Proposal Two: 55,689 Yes and 6,625 No (with 80-percent of precincts reporting)
- New Buffalo Parks Millage: 603 Yes to 399 No
- New Buffalo Road Millage: 610 Yes to 396 No
- Watervliet Township Library Millage: 921 Yes to 414 No
- Coloma Township Road Millage: 1,351 Yes to 1,000 No
- Coloma Township Public Safety Millage Renewal: 1,466 Yes to 856 No
- Hagar Township Operating Millage Renewal: 1,000 Yes to 713 No
- Niles Charter Township Police Protection Millage: 4,084 Yes to 1,419 No
- Niles Charter Township Fire Protection Millage: 3,713 Yes to 1,781 No
- Sodus Township Fire Protection Proposal: 801 Yes to 228 No
- St. Joseph Charter Township Road Millage Proposal: 3,669 Yes to 2,421 No
- Three Oaks Township Ambulance Millage: 894 Yes to 334 No
