The Michigan Department of Transportation is suspending work and lifting traffic restrictions wherever possible this holiday weekend to ease congestion and increase safety out on the roads.
MDOT’s Nick Schirripa tells us there are going to be a lot of cars out and about, and the agency wants to clear the way for them. However, it can’t shut down certain projects.
“This year we are suspending work on 92 out of 158 projects and those obviously that we aren’t able to suspend the work and remove lane closures and restrictions, it’s because there’s a lane we can’t reopen or a bridge that hasn’t been rebuilt yet,” Schirripa said.
Schirripa says some major Southwest Michigan projects can’t be set aside for the weekend.
“In our southwest region, we have, I think, 11 that will still be in place. And most notably, I think the couple of I-94 projects there in Berrien County, two lanes open in each direction is the best we can do because we’re rebuilding it.”
So, still plan for construction traffic on I-94.
Beginning at 3 p.m. Friday and continuing until 6 a.m. Tuesday, 92 out of 158 projects statewide have lane restrictions removed. While drivers will see suspended operations in most MDOT work zones for the weekend, drivers are advised that equipment and certain traffic configurations may remain in place, like temporary shifts or shoulder closures. Therefore, Schirripa tells everyone to drive cautiously.
