Shipping across the Great Lakes could be affected by a closure at the Soo Locks.
Starting on Sunday, the MacArthur Lock will close until April for safety inspections, repairs, and maintenance.
Carrie Fox is with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and says 80 million tons of cargo goes through the Soo Locks each year.
“The Soo Locks and the St. Marys River are the only connecting channel between Lake Superior and Lakes Michigan and Huron,” Fox said.
Fox says the MacArthur Lock was built in the 1940s and maintenance is needed to make sure shipping across Michigan isn’t interrupted.
The Poe Lock will remain open until January 15, or until commercial traffic ceases, whichever occurs first.
