High school graduates once picked a college or university based on location and course offerings, but politics has become a factor for many when choosing a school.
In Michigan, students now have a tool to help them assess those factors. Jon Marcus with the nonprofit Hechinger Report says the red and blue divide has made the choice more complicated.
“Where students once picked a college based on the academics and the social life, now they’re looking at what the state laws are that might affect them, how colleges include people that look like them – whether it’s race, people that are from rural places, veterans.”
To address student questions, the Hechinger Report has created a first-of-its-kind “College Welcome Guide” that ranks four-year schools on free speech and the number of veterans enrolled. The guide also shows those that have banned diversity, equity, and inclusion and provides data on gender and racial diversity among students and faculty.
