Members and friends of the Scott Club gathered outside the 132- year-old landmark for a celebration of the life of member Carole Hodgman who passed away in March. A resident of South Haven for over 50 years, Carole made a profound impact on her community through her work as a dedicated educator, her philanthropic contributions and her passion for gardening. Her family made possible the funding for the project which is capable of providing lighting schemes to fit the season.
Built in 1893 and known in its early years as Literary Hall, the building was designed by John Cornelius Randall, who designed many elegant homes in South Haven. It is built of Indiana sandstone, in Queen Anne architecture style with a Moorish dome. A designated Michigan Historic Site, the Scott Club name honors Sir Walter Scott, a Scottish novelist, poet, playwright and historian. The current Scott Club membership is in the midst of a project to make the building more accessible with the installation of an elevator-style lift.
