For many people, scrolling through the day’s headlines can bring a sense of uncertainty and anxiety. However, there’s also the belief that you’re best served by focusing on the things you can control. Matt Swab believes peace of mind starts with preparation, and that’s exactly what he and his team aim to provide through The Swab Agency at Farm Bureau Insurance in Bridgman.

While the name Farm Bureau Insurance might suggest a focus on agriculture, Swab says the agency serves a far broader range of customers.

“People often say, ‘I don’t own a farm, so you probably can’t help me,’” Swab explains. “But we’re actually very competitive across personal lines like home and auto insurance, as well as commercial policies for businesses.”

Swab’s path into the insurance industry began with a career built on service. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy and later working in law enforcement as a K-9 officer, he began searching for a new way to continue serving the public while building a future for his family. That search led him to Farm Bureau Insurance and eventually to Southwest Michigan, where he has spent the past several years establishing his agency and building strong community relationships.

Since opening the agency in Southwest Michigan four years ago, Swab says Farm Bureau has steadily increased its local presence, thanks in part to competitive pricing and a strong service model. The agency works with homeowners, families, and a wide variety of businesses across the region.

For business owners, the Swab Agency offers coverage tailored to the realities of operating in today’s economy. Farm Bureau has recently introduced specialized insurance packages designed for wineries, breweries, and restaurants — industries that play an increasingly important role in Southwest Michigan’s tourism and hospitality economy. The agency also works closely with contractors, particularly as workers’ compensation costs remain a major concern in many industries.

“We’ve actually seen about a 17 percent decrease in workers’ compensation costs over the past two years with Farm Bureau,” Swab says. “That’s a significant benefit for contractors who are always watching their overhead.”

Swab said families also benefit from programs designed with real-world challenges in mind. One example is Farm Bureau’s competitive pricing for younger drivers, which can be a major concern for households adding a new 16-year-old driver to their insurance policy.

Beyond competitive products, Swab believes the agency’s local presence is one of its strongest advantages. Farm Bureau operates with a regional structure that keeps agents, claims adjusters, and underwriters closely connected to the communities they serve.

“You’re working with people who live here,” Swab says. “Our claims adjusters’ kids go to school with our clients’ kids. Our underwriters are based in the region. That local connection makes a difference.”

That community connection is also central to the Swab Agency’s identity. Swab and his team maintain a strong presence across Southwest Michigan, supporting school programs, youth athletics, and local events.

Swab himself coaches wrestling at Stevensville Lakeshore High School, where his son competes, and the agency regularly sponsors school sports teams, DECA programs, and youth involved in agricultural programs at county fairs.

“Serving the community is my number one priority,” Swab says. “This career allows me to stay active, give back, and support the communities where our clients live.”

Behind the agency’s success is a small but dedicated team. Swab credits his wife Marissa, office manager Tammi, and team members Emily and Lyssa with helping the agency maintain its customer-focused approach.

“There’s no way any of this would be possible without them,” he says.

That commitment to service and community engagement has not gone unnoticed. Swab was recently recognized as part of the region’s 40 Under 40 class, highlighting young leaders making an impact across Southwest Michigan.

For Swab, the recognition is meaningful, but the mission remains simple: help families and businesses protect what matters most.
