Joining the Farmers Market Food Chain

So, let's say you've to an absolute killer recipe for some great family tradition that you would love to take to market. Maybe the fun way to start would be to sell your products at one of the myriad farmers markets in Michigan's Great Southwest, but you haven't a clue as to how to start down that road. Never fear, the crew at the Michigan State University Extension office on Hillandale Road in Benton Harbor is ready to ride to the rescue.

On Tuesday, May 24, 2016, the Berrien County MSU Extension team brings you "How to Start a Cottage Food Law Business in Michigan." The two hour session at the MSU Extension Center's Research Lab at 1737 Hillandale Road in Benton Harbor will run from 3pm until 5pm that day to bring you the ins and outs of creating your own small food business in the region.

Focusing on the Cottage Food Law guidelines, food safety, allowed foods for sale, packaging, labeling, processing procedures, finance and marketing, the class also allows plenty of time for questions and answers for your individual attention.

The session, however, does not address foods that require commercial licensing such as salsa, pickles, barbeque sauces, or anything containing meat or dairy.

There is a nominal $20 fee which will include a certificate of participation available upon completion of training that you can display at your farmers market booth going forward.

While cancelations may be made, any such action on or after May 13th will be subject to a $10 cancelation fee.
