Lake Michigan College has announced that Kimberly “Kimmy” Cramer, who received her Associate of Applied Science in Nursing on May 4, has been named the Spring 2025 recipient of the Spirit of Nursing award, one of the highest honors bestowed upon a graduating nursing student.
The Spirit of Nursing award is presented each semester to the graduate who best exemplifies the philosophy and core values of the LMC Nursing Program. The award recognizes not only academic success, but also the personal qualities and professional attributes that are essential in nursing—compassion, communication, integrity, collaboration, inclusivity, and leadership.
Cramer was nominated by her classmates and selected by nursing faculty from among the nominees. Peers describe her as a standout leader and a supportive teammate, both in the classroom and in clinical settings. “She has good communication skills and is a leader during simulations,” one classmate shared. Another noted, “Kimmy is caring toward both patients and her peers.”
Cramer expressed gratitude for the recognition and reflected on her journey in healthcare. “I started working in the OB unit in St. Joseph in 2017 as a unit secretary, and I wanted to learn more. I wanted to be more available to patients and to build the skills to help them have a positive experience,” she said. “People are at such a vulnerable time in their lives when they come to us, and I want to provide them with comfort and care.”
“Kimmy has consistently demonstrated what it means to be a nurse who not only delivers excellent care but also lifts up those around her,” said LMC Nursing Director Denise Gardner. “Her actions reflect the very essence of our program’s core values. We are proud to honor her with this award.”
The Spirit of Nursing award celebrates students who:
- Demonstrate a caring attitude toward patients and peers
- Communicate effectively and collaborate in academic and healthcare settings
- Exhibit inclusivity, civility, and respect for diversity
- Act with integrity and a strong ethical foundation
- Show a commitment to excellence
- Are recognized as leaders and role models within the program
LMC said in a release that Kimmy’s recognition is a testament to her unwavering commitment to these ideals. The nursing faculty and her fellow graduates commend her for the heart, strength, and professionalism she brings to the field.
The Spirit of Nursing award is presented at the completion of each semester’s cohort. Nursing students eligible for the Spring 2025 honor began their program studies in Fall 2023.
