Describing themselves as ‘another grab & go option’ in downtown St. Joseph, Licks Sweet Treats and Eats plans to open soon at 610 Broad Street. All that remains is final health department inspection, according to social media announcements posted over the weekend.
The counter and kitchen will occupy the space formerly known as ‘Mimi’s Cupcakes’, on the corner of the alley between Main and State Streets, facing Broad Street.
Owner Dan Leung of St. Joseph says ‘Licks’ will be more than a snack and dessert shop, but not get into full meals…at least not at the beginning.
Leung has been the successful operator of the concession stands at Jean Klock Park and the Howard Ice Arena the past couple of years. Previously Leung was the concessionaire at Warren Dunes State Park from 2016-2019 and at New Buffalo Beach in 2021.
Licks gave their Facebook followers a brief preview of their plans for downtown St. Joseph in a weekend post:
As a beach concessionaire since 2016 at Warren Dunes State Park, New Buffalo Beach and most recently the last two years at Jean Klock Park, we have now moved into a storefront for the first time. Even though we won’t be on the beach, we are a short distance to Silver Beach. And we’re the concessionaire at Howard Ice Arena in Saint Joe through 2025.
We are excited for this NEW location providing another grab & go spot for Downtown Saint Joe.
Some of the food offerings will include…
Red Hot Chicago™ Beef Hot Dogs
(Chicago Maxwell Street Style of grilled onions & mustard)
Honey-Batter Chicken Corn Dogs
Calzones, Pizza Puffs
Bavarian Pretzels
Italian Ice and Italian Ice Floats
Soft-serve Ice Cream
Frozen Beaded Treats similar to Dippin’ Dots (Coffee & Creamer, Fruit & Yogurt, Ice Cream and Mocktails)
Organic Refreshers from Tractor Beverage in flavors such as Mandarin-Cardamon, Farmer’s Punch, Strawberry Dragonfruit and more.
Fiji Water
Steaz Organic Ice Green Teas
BODYARMOR Hydration Drink
Bubble Tea and Bubble Refreshers
We will also offer BEACH CHAIR & UMBRELLA RENTALS
Leung said he will emphasize healthy and high-quality products, so they may not always be the cheapest available. However, he believes those attributes are what has made his other concession operations successful. Leung said he expects the downtown location to have a longer season than beachside stands, but perhaps not twelve months a year, as he also operates at the Howard Ice Arena during the Winter.
No firm opening date has been set pending the health inspection, however Leung told us Licks plans to open as soon as possible, hopefully prior to the upcoming holiday weekend.
