LMC Speaker Series, other events announced

Lake Michigan College has announced the lineup for its next Speaker Series, and there have been a few changes this year. LMC Vice President of Academics Ken Flowers tells us the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan name has been retired, and it’s now just the Lake Michigan College Speaker Series. That’s after the college took over the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan Speaker Series in 2017 and over time incorporated it more into the Mendel Center programming.

“Basically over time it has become integrated into a fundamental part of our programming, so as the coming season was being planned, we really wanted to fully incorporate the Mendel Mainstage, the Economic Club Speaker Series, and the visual and performing arts department activities just into this one season,” Flowers said. ” So, we felt that using the name ‘Speaker Series’ would retain the heritage of the Economic Club while also ensuring that all of the programming is incorporated under LMC’s goals to serve our students and the community.”

Flowers says there are no longer memberships to the Speaker Series, and anyone who wants to attend an engagement can just buy a ticket to it like any other event. In the lineup this year are former Chief Official White House Photographer Pete Souza on September 19, William Shatner on October 14, and boxing champion Laila Ali on January 18. The Shatner event will include a screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn. The engagements were announced this week along with the full Mendel Center lineup for the coming year.
