LMC’s annual Student Benefit Auction coming March 7

LMC Student Auction

Lake Michigan College’s annual Student Benefit Auction returns next month, raising money to help area students afford college and cover unexpected needs. The event is set for Saturday, March 7 at the Mendel Center’s Grand Upton Hall.

LMC Foundation Executive Director Doug Schaffer says the auction, which began under the leadership of Carolyn Hanson in 1988, has raised more than $5 million dollars over the years.

“This year is its 34th edition of the Winner’s Circle Auction, now called the Student Benefit Auction. We raise dollars for scholarships to make going to college as inexpensive, and in many cases, absolutely free, especially for local residents,” said Schaffer.

Schaffer says the endowment funds nearly $250,000 in scholarship support each year, but that’s not all.

“We’re also raising money for special programs and special needs that students have that aren’t expected so that when they come to college and are facing challenges that impede their ability to be as good as they can be in the classroom, we also have support for them in those situations,” Schaffer said.

This year’s presenting sponsor is Sturgis Bank. Bank officials say Lake Michigan College plays a key role in meeting workforce and training needs across Southwest Michigan.

Unlike previous years, organizers say this year will not be a sit-down dinner and instead, attendees will have access to “heavy appetizer” stations and extended time for socializing and bidding in the silent auction. The evening also includes a live auction, a $10,000 dollar raffle drawing, and live music. Organizers say the goal remains the same: bringing the community together to invest in local students and their futures.
