Motorists traveling between Niles and Buchanan will want to plan ahead this summer and fall, as a significant bridge repair and preservation project is set to begin next week on Niles-Buchanan Road in southern Berrien County.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), in partnership with contractor Anlaan Corp., will launch a $3.6 million construction effort on Tuesday, July 8, focused on the Niles-Buchanan Road bridge over US-31.

The four-month project, running through Friday, November 7, will involve a series of structural improvements designed to extend the life of the bridge and enhance long-term safety for the traveling public. According to MDOT, the scope of work includes:

  • Bridge deck repairs and an epoxy overlay

  • Replacement of pin and hanger systems

  • Joint and approach replacements

  • Painting and application of pressure relief joints

  • Silane treatment and substructure sealing

While Niles-Buchanan Road will remain open throughout the project, drivers should anticipate single-lane closures and traffic shifts, which may cause delays during peak hours.

“This investment is part of our continued efforts to maintain critical infrastructure while minimizing long-term disruption,” said MDOT in a release. “The improvements will help preserve the bridge and improve safety for years to come.”

Economic models estimate the project will directly and indirectly support 34 jobs during its construction period.

The Niles-Buchanan Road bridge provides a vital east-west connection for residents, commuters, and commercial traffic in southern Berrien County. The upcoming repairs are seen as both necessary and timely for maintaining the structural integrity of the bridge, which spans the busy US-31 corridor.

Travelers are advised to be alert for crews and equipment in the work zone and to follow posted signage and lane restrictions. Updates will be available through MDOT’s online construction map and local traffic alerts.
