MDOT Rolls Out 5-Year Transpo Plan in Search of Public Comment

While it might be too late to push projects not already in the pipeline, the Michigan Department of Transportation is, nevertheless, seeking your comment on the department’s draft Five-Year Transportation Program for 2019-through-2023.

At this stage of the game, the draft document is approaching final approval, but the public comment period is now officially open for public input for the next month during which time you can at least make your voice heard.

MDOT is seeking public comment on its draft document, which is updated annually. The program includes information about MDOT’s mobility initiatives, revenues and a list of specific transportation projects planned for the next five years in each of MDOT’s seven regions, including the Southwest Region representing our area of the state.

You can view the program document on the MDOT website at www.michigan.gov/mdot5yearplan, as well as an interactive map showing the location, description and proposed construction year for upcoming projects. Here’s a direct link to the full plan:

The Five-Year Transportation Program, which is a continuous, interactive dialogue with the state transportation system users, emphasizes an integrated multi-modal program, system preservation and safety. The program also anchors MDOT’s project development efforts while carrying out the goals and policies outlined by the State Transportation Commission (STC).

In addition to providing a list of MDOT-managed road and bridge projects, the document addresses investment strategies, funding assumptions, and economic benefits for all modes of transportation in Michigan, including the following:

  • Highways
  • Public transit
  • Rail
  • Air
  • Marine
  • Nonmotorized transportation

MDOT submitted the draft 2019-2023 Five-Year Transportation Program to the STC lastThursday, July 19, 2018. It will remain a draft program until it receives final approval by the STC, which is expected to occur on Thursday, October 18, 2018.

Alternative formats, such as print, large type and language translation versions of the report, are available upon request. Comments will be accepted now until Tuesday, August 21, and can be e-mailed to mdot-five-year-program@michigan.gov or directed to:
