Labor Day weekend is about here, and the Michigan Department of Transportation is doing what it can to help drivers hitting the road.

Spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us MDOT is suspending road work where possible.

We do our best to get out of the way, so we are removing restrictions statewide on a hundred out of 164 projects,” Schirripa said. “So about 61 % of lane restrictions will be removed.”

aces where they can’t remove the lane restrictions. Schirripa says if a bridge has been torn down or a lane has been ripped out, they very well can’t let traffic through. There are a few such locations in Southwest Michigan.

In Berrien County, obviously the big I-94 project, two lanes open in each direction between Britain Avenue and Red Arrow Highway, so that’ll be narrowed down by a lane, but still two lanes open in each direction. And the westbound exit ramps are closed and detoured at Pipestone Road, exit 29.”

I-94 between mile markers 34 and 42 is also down to two lanes.

Schirripa tells everyone heading out on the roads for Labor Day weekend to have patience and slow down. Also, please put away your phone when behind the wheel.
