Medical Society says “Don’t Forget About the Flu!”

Michigan physicians–thru the State Medical Society–are warning residents not to forget about traditional flu vaccine this Winter, with all of the focus lately on COVID vaccination.  The doctors say the flu is still out there–and it’s a threat to all ages.

Here is the advice in the Medical Society statement:

“The Michigan State Medical Society and our state’s physician community are urging eligible adults and children of all ages to get their flu shot. Current data tells us that flu vaccine rates are significantly lower than in past years. Last year the seasonal flu was largely mitigated due to increased masking, handwashing and social distancing measures required by COVID-19, but make no mistake: this winter is not the same as last winter.

“With students back in the classroom and the majority of people now in the workplace, flu cases are rising. It is even possible to become infected with the flu and COVID simultaneously. ‘Flurona’ is being sick with COVID and the flu at the same time, which can severely hamper immune system response. The flu shot is easy to obtain and is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the possibility of becoming severely ill.

“If there is not an uptake in flu vaccination rates, we could be headed for a twindemic, which is the absolute worst-case scenario 2022 could bring. Our health care systems are already stretched beyond capacity. Please get your flu shot today and ask your loved ones to do the same.”
