Meeting to address economic effects of Palisades closure

A report on the effects of the Palisades nuclear power plant closure will be presented at a meeting set for next week. Market Van Buren’s Sarah Snoeyink tells us the Palisades Economic Recovery Team was tasked with compiling the report. The team includes the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission, Kinexus Group, Michigan Works, and Market Van Buren.

“There was some modeling software used, two different programs, to look at the quantitative impacts of the closure,” Snoeyink said. “Then a research team from U of M went out and conducted a variety of interviews and conversations with folks throughout the community — business leaders, community members, employees and organizations — to try to to get some anecdotal context of what these losses might look like.”

Snoeyink says researchers from the University of Michigan and the Palisades Economic Recovery Team will explain their findings at next week’s Zoom meeting and take questions from the public. With a chance the Palisades plant could now reopen, she says the information is still important to know for when it does eventually close for good. The meeting will start at 1 p.m. Monday.
