Midnight Fire Rips Through Three Units of Benton Harbor’s River Terrace Apartment Complex

Fire ripped through several units of the River Terrace Apartment complex in Benton Harbor overnight, but fortunately everyone escaped without physical harm.

Three units at the 270 unit complex, just a block away from the St. Joseph River, were destroyed by the flames, and a total of 10 units are currently being assisted by the Berrien County Red Cross because utilities had to be shut off due to the fire which occurred in building #8 at the large and well-maintained complex.

Steve Cook from Continental Management, which operates the popular apartment community at 200 River Terrace Drive in the city, says that the alarms came in shortly before midnight, around 11:45pm last night, Monday, March 8, 2021.

Firefighters from the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety also called in mutual aid from the City of St. Joseph’s Department of Public Safety who said that flames were visible shooting from the roof of the building as firetrucks rolled across the Bicentennial Bridge on the way to help.

Cook says that the fire remains under investigation today, and there was no immediately identifiable cause for it, but he’s grateful that nobody was injured in the incident.
