That’s a powerful indictment of an industry—but Tom and Katie Burrell are out to change that picture in Southwest Michigan. They began by choosing to be a franchisee of Mighty Dog Roofing because of the advantages it offers to their vision and the community.

That quest begins with a simple but unique process: The Free Mighty Dog 25-Point Exterior Inspection of your home. The roof is the focus, but a trained, certified Mighty Dog specialist will carefully examine your roof, gutters, siding and windows. With your permission, they will inspect the attic where tell-tale signs of roof damage may be hiding. You will receive a comprehensive, detailed report on the exterior condition of your home, with specific recommendations on solutions, whether it be repairs or replacement.
As in keeping with their commitment to community, they pledge to contribute to one of three local charities from their profit margin on every roofing project they sell. Tom and Katie love living here in Michigan’s Great Southwest and they want everyone to be able to enjoy a full and happy life here. Which is why they are so committed to giving back. Mighty Dog Roofing of Benton Harbor is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Installer for four years running. This certification is afforded to only 600 companies nationwide and is less than one percent of roofing contractors. Tom explained, “We know the products. We’ve been trained on them. We’ve gone to the national factories and learned about how shingles are made and why Owens Corning products perform better than competing brands.”
However, he also points out that Mighty Dog offers many other roofing solutions as well, “We recently took our whole team to a metal roofing manufacturing facility to learn more about their products and how they can work for our customers.” Tom related that some customers come in ‘set’ on moving to a metal roof, but when they learn about the quality of Owens Corning shingles and their 50-year warranty, they shift to that option for about half the cost.
The Owens Corning Platinum 50-Year product and workmanship warranty is one of the differentiating factors in the market for Mighty Dog Roofing. Many shingles offer a 25-year product warranty and some offer more. Owens Corning, favored by Mighty Dog Roofing, offers a 50-year limited warranty on product and workmanship. No others warrant the installation of workmanship for longer.
Mighty Dog Roofing takes a ‘diagnosis-prescription’ approach to analyzing your roofing requirements. Tom told us he recognizes that some customers prioritize price and that’s okay. They may not be planning to be in their home for 30, 40, 50 years. So, they offer ‘good-better-best’ options, carefully detailed and explained to the customer after the 25-Point Exterior Inspection. Then, the customer decides. Whatever their choice, they can have full confidence that the Mighty Dog Roofing team is poised to implement their installation.
With their competent and professional teams, most residential roof installs may only take one day. Occasionally there are unforeseen challenges as Tom acknowledges, “Nobody likes surprises”. If additional time and materials are required beyond the original estimate, they will make every attempt to offer those additions ‘at cost’. Tom believes unexpected costs to the customer should be avoided whenever possible. It’s another ingredient in their commitment to integrity, value, and building relationships with customers.
As Co-Owners, Tom and Katie apply those same principles to building their team. More than 30 crew members are on roofs across 4+ counties. They are particularly proud that three of their subcontractor crews have been virtually full-time with Mighty Dog Roofing for three years.
Tom told us, “Our installation teams are sub-contractors, but they’re also an extension of Mighty Dog Roofing. Three of them have been full time with us for three years. We’re training our people with Mighty Dog and Owens Corning values & principles, and they’re doing exceptional work for us. They are a part of our Mighty Dog Roofing family.”
Four years later Tom and Katie Burrell are humbled by the trust that people have placed in them. They are excited by how much their business has grown. Their team consists of three Sales Consultants, a Project Coordinator, and a Project Assistant, and they are looking to add more talent in the near future.
Their offices and showroom are located at 500 Renaissance Drive, Suite 104B, in the Edgewater neighborhood in St. Joseph. It’s not where you might expect to find a roofing company. However, it suits quite well a growing and professional business led by two entrepreneurs who put the customer first and find solutions for them.
Tom Burrell has an MBA from Indiana University and a BS in Operations Management from Ball State University. With over 30 years’ background in operations, sourcing, supply chain and people leadership, this expertise and experience help him in changing and challenging the roofing business in Southwest Michigan.
Katie Burrell has a Bachelor’s Degree in Public History from Western Michigan University. She has more than a dozen years of experience in the home services industry, as well as experience in museum and archival work. Her role as General Manager is responsible for the business operations, human resources and financial management of Mighty Dog Roofing.
