Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad has received an award from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative.
Muhammad was in Montreal this week for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Mayors’ Conference, where he received the organization’s Impact Award. It was given to him for his work related to strategic programs tied to Cities Initiative and for his advocacy efforts regionally and nationally.
In 2023, Mayor Muhammad and Benton Harbor were also selected as inaugural recipients of the Mayor Richard M. Daley Water Equity Community Award, which provides support to communities that are working to remove lead lines and modernize water infrastructure.
During his acceptance speech for the Impact Award, Muhammad said water is power, so “when people — Black, White, Asian and Indigenous — work together, this is when we will see real power.”
The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative is a coalition led by mayors and elected leaders working to promote the environmental and socio-economic health of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Basin. It has more than 260 member municipalities.
