The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety is getting some national recognition for its fire training program.

Speaking to the city Public Safety and Public Works Committee this week, department deputy director of fire services Brian Kazmierzak said the department is featured heavily in a new training publication.

This book that I’m holding up is the new fire instructor textbook that’s being used nationwide, and there’s about 30 or 40 references to the city of Benton Harbor and Benton Harbor Public Safety in this book,” Kazmierzak said.

Kazmierzak said the department in recent years has hit fire training very hard.

You know, the one thing I’ll say is when we started this fire academy in 2021, we were told it would fail. We were told Benton Harbor can never do this. And here we are in a national textbook. So, expect great things.”

Kazmierzak said the department being featured in the manual is the result of years of hard work. He said he’s proud of the whole team.
