The city of South Haven has hired a new beach safety manager and chief lifeguard.

The city says David Figueredo will start on April 6, leading the new beach lifeguard program.

The city hasn’t had lifeguards for more than two decades, but after some high profile drownings in recent years and a great deal of study, the decision was made to bring back the program this year.

Figueredo has plenty of experience. He was previously a beach lifeguard manager in Evanston, Illinois, where he led lifeguards through numerous live emergency responses, delievered in-service training, and was named Evanston Lifeguard Service “Manager of the Year” in 2015. From 2017 to 2019, he was lakefront supervisor, overseeing five municipal beaches and 90 lifeguards in Evanston.

Figueredo most recently worked a corporate job, but says his passion for water safety never left him, and he’s eager to bring his experience to South Haven.
