New Buffalo Township leaders to hold town hall to address marijuana questions from residents

A town hall is being planned in New Buffalo Township for police and township leaders to answer the public’s questions about issues created by the area’s new marijuana businesses.

New Buffalo Township Supervisor Michelle Heit tells us the township board will often hear comments from residents about the cannabis establishments, but it can’t really engage in a back and forth discussion with residents at its regular meetings.

We just don’t allow for a question and answer during our business meeting,” Heit said. “So I think it would be helpful to the public to be able to get those answers to the questions that they have. And they typically don’t call the office here, even though we’re here Monday through Friday, and we could certainly answer those questions then.”

So, what do people want to know?

How many dispensaries will there be? How many do we have right now? What are we going to do about the increased traffic? How are we preparing for 420, which is April 20th? That sort of thing.”

Heit says a lot of the questions are about traffic.

New Buffalo Township Police Lieutenant Thad Chartrand suggested and will lead the town hall. The event will be at the New Buffalo Township Hall on Tuesday, January 27 starting at 6 p.m. Heit says the township board and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department will also be on hand.
