New Hot Dog Vendor Seeks Approval for Lions Park Beach

If all goes according to plan tonight you should be one step closer to having a new hot dog cart option at Lions Park Beach in St. Joseph thanks to Myles Hambley. Hambley has filed an application for a seasonal day vendor license to establish his hot dog cart business at Lions Park Beach from April through October of each year.

He has acquired a new stainless steel Dream Maker Malibu hot dog cart similar to the one shown in the photo accompanying this story on Moody on the Market. He’s getting the unit from the cart manufacturer based in St. Petersburg, Florida. Mr. Hambley’s umbrella, however, is red and white instead of the blue and yellow shown in the photo from the Dream Maker team.

Hambley’s new cart would be the third hot dog vendor in the city with the Hot Dog Kart anchored at State & Broad in downtown St. Joseph, the Twisted Dog alongside the cannon in Lake Bluff Park, and now — pending city commission approval tonight — at Lions Park Beach.

Once city commission approval is granted, Hambley will need to gain his health department license and approval. He already has his sales tax license from the State of Michigan and his certificate of liability insurance, so if the commission gives his business the green light tonight he hopes to be open by the end of the month or very early next month with hot dogs, soft drinks and assorted potato chips vending at Lions Park Beach, which is a very popular beach for families with younger children.

Myles tells me that he hopes to start out with a time schedule of 10am until about 8pm, but will adjust those hours to whatever the buying public creates a demand for.

Hambley is a resident of St. Joseph and operates under the company name of Hambley Enterprizes.

Lions Park Beach is one of only five public locations where seasonal vending is permitted in the city. The others include the two other hot dog vending sites as well as sites at Lookout Park and Tiscornia Beach. Those sites require the removal of the vendor stands at the end of each day.

The city will also be asked to approve an amended vending license for Scooter Joe’s which would allow him to place a 20×20 tent structure alongside his livery house to provide cover to his surrey bikes. It would largely be a canopy only during hours of operation, but sides would be put into place when the business is closed to act as security for the bikes stored there on site. Joe Allen has operated Scooter Joe’s in the city for 8 years now with bike and scooter rentals, surrey bikes and in the parking lot at Lakeview and Broad in St. Joe.
