New Hotel and Manufacturing Company Expansion Get Tax Abatements In Michigan City

A couple of major new developments just over the state line will result in a new hotel for Michigan City and expansion of a manufacturing company there with new jobs in the pipeline as a result.

The Economic Development Corporation Michigan City this week gave the green light to tax abatement requests on both projects at the Michigan City Common Council meeting. Both projects received approval for tax abatements on real property for the two businesses investing in Michigan City.

Michigan City Hotels, LLC is the realty company for Amerilodge Group which is planning a new Holiday Inn Express & Suites Hotel on the city’s south side on Kieffer Road. Construction of the new four story, 58,000 square foot hotel will produce a total capital investment of $7.2 million and create 25 new positions.

The new lodging facility will feature the brand’s recently introduced “Formula Blue” design and will include 90 rooms, meeting rooms, a swimming pool, fitness center, and breakfast bar for guests to enjoy. The targeted completion date for the project is March of 2019.

Asad Malik is President & CEO at Amerilodge. He says, “Amerilodge Group is excited about the market in Michigan City and happy to work with them on this project.”

Meanwhile, Mulhern Belting, Inc., a conveyor belt manufacturer and wholesaler that has been in Michigan City for more than five years. Thanks to a substantial spike in business growth, Mulhern is expanding their current facility located on Lumber Center Road.

Mulhern Realty Company, acting on behalf of Mulhern Belting, will receive the tax abatement for construction of an additional 14,000 square foot facility on their property. Construction of that facility and new equipment purchases will result in an investment of $1-million. That project not only retains the current 15 employees, it will also add up to 10 new employees over the next five years. Receipt of the tax abatement will allow the company to expand as needed and retain their business in Michigan City.

The combined tax abatements, which were approved by the Michigan City Common Council on Tuesday night, will total $8.2 million in investment, retain 15 employees, and create up to 35 new jobs in Michigan City.

Clarence Hulse is Executive Director of the Economic Development Corporation Michigan City, and says they are “Proud to partner with new and existing businesses to help them remain and grow in Michigan City. We are happy to welcome a national brand like Holiday Inn Express & Suites, and to retain a growing existing business like Mulhern Belting that will continue to call Michigan City home.”

Amerilodge Group is a privately-owned company which manages, operates, and owns hotels throughout the Midwest.  The majority of their hotels are located in Michigan, with particular focus and concentration of properties in the southeastern corner of Michigan.

Mulhern Belting is one of the largest conveyor belting wholesalers and fabricators in the world.
