Corewell Health has announced the opening of a new substance use treatment and education center in Berrien County.

Corewell Vice President of Rehabilitation Melinda Gruber tells us the new center will offer services both in Niles and Benton Harbor. It’s been formed after several years of work and with the support of three doctors who will offer treatment as part of it.

“The types of services we will offer include care coordination with community partners, counseling, and social service referrals, harm  reduction, medications for substance use disorders, peer recovery coaches,” Gruber said.

Gruber says Berrien County ranks 17th out of Michigan’s 83 counties in vulnerability to substance use. Corewell has long seen the need to offer more support to those who seek help.

“We have a large number of people who end up in the emergency department or in the hospital or suffering from chronic diseases as a result of substance use, and there’s options and treatments available. So we want to make sure that those are available and individuals have access to them.”

The new treatment center will operate out of the Corewell Health Care Center in Niles and the Corewell Health Center for Wellness in Benton Harbor. Gruber says anyone seeking treatment can ask their doctor for a referral or simply contact the clinic directly. The number is 269.687.1126. Also, walk-ins are welcome at the Niles location.

Corewell is working with partners that include Carol’s Hope, Intercare, and Riverwood to operate the new center.
